What is smudging?
Smudging is traditionally a ceremony for purifying or cleansing the soul of negative thoughts of a person or place. It has been used for thousands of years in ritual or prayer.
What is in a smudge package or bundle?
The most common smudging material is white sage either burned loose or in bundles. Smudge can be a mixture of different plants, sacred herbs, essential oils and resin. Sometimes they are bundled up in a “stick” and other times they are “loose” to burn in a heat safe bowl. Palo Santo is also used for smudging and bringing in positive energy. See below for more info on Palo Santo.
How do I smudge? What should I smudge?
There are many traditions and rituals surrounding smudging. You can make it as structured or as relaxed as you choose.
1) Have a fire safe bowl available and light your smudge stick or loose smudge material in a bowl.
2) Let it flame for a few moments and wave your hand over it to put out the flame. Now there should be smoke rising from the bowl or stick.
3) Scoop the smoke up and over your head and over your body to “bathe” away any negativity attached to or surrounding you. You can take a moment to honor the North, East, South, West, Ground Below and Ethers above. These are just thoughts and suggestions, not required.
If you are smudging your home, car, office or wherever follow these same steps of first smudging yourself and then go through the rooms or spaces you wish to cleanse. You can repeat in your head or aloud, “Only goodness, kindness and peace are welcome in this space” as you smudge this area.
THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WITH SMUDGING!! These are just suggestions for you. There can be no harm done in any ritual you perform with a. good intention. You can apply as many rules as you choose or let it be as relaxed as lighting a candle or incense.
